Today's Macro Photograph. Crawling Insect

This is an Abedus indentatus, which is a member of the belostomatidae family. This arthropod is known as a giant water bug, or a toe biter.  These insects live in streams or ponds, and are predators.  They can usually be found lying motionless in the water, waiting for prey to happen by.  This insect feeds on aquatic insects, tadpoles and small fish.  The insect in this picture is a male, you can tell by the eggs that are deposited on its back, this usually occurs in the spring time. It takes about three weeks for the eggs to hatch. This photograph was taken in Eaton Canyon, Altadena, California.
